Successful leadership training is designed based upon essential needs of the organization. Leadership training should encompass consideration for the fostering learners ability to influence others as a function of leadership. There are four key considerations to build a successful leadership training program: 1) understanding leadership versus management skills; 2) importance of influence; 3) character and 4) strategically focused.
- Leadership versus Management of People – First, aspiring leaders should be reminded we lead people through influence. In our actions to influence we work to model the character role that fosters the values of our organization.
- Influence – the ability of a leader to influence others is the critical mechanism in which leaders can move the organization.
- Character – modeling quality character as a leader that reflects the written values of the organization is essential. The visible portrayal of character allows employees to be influenced by the leader “walking the walk” of essential values.
- Strategically focused – a strategically focused initiative should include training development that is aligned with the goals, strategies, mission and vision of the organization.
